so, we saved the best for last! the plan was sea world till we dropped -- turned out to be 7 hours.

never a fan of theme parks myself, sea world was no different. for the most part, i could take it or leave it. that said, two things were particularly neat. touching and feeding the stingrays was about as nifty as it advertised - they are soft, and the genuinely seem like they want to interact with people. second, the beluga whales are absolutely beautiful. just gorgeous. they are officially my favorite marine animal.

we also squeezed in a visit with the fadden's, and once all said and done, matthew and i were officially exhausted.

so, today we left our cushy, easy-going pace in north county, and traded up for some urban, high-brow activities. well ... as urban as san diego gets, and as high-brow as a 4 year old can put up with.

we headed to balboa park with every intention of hitting 3-4 museums. we got to 2. hey, you always gotta aim high, yes?

and after 5 hours of thoroughly discovering the reuben h. fleet science center and the san diego natural history museum (accompanied by nathan colkitt), matthew and i met up with the depena's for a little r&r.

so after a long day of driving, we took things easy. breakfast rooftop, beach time, lunch listening to the sitar player, and a healthy nap.

when it came to fireworks, however, it was a different story. one of the very reasons we camped up in carlsbad was because oceanside usually has fireworks. but they were canceled this year, so matthew and i had to seek them out elsewhere.

lucky, kevin phillips and was up in long beach with his crew, and matthew and i made the trip up there to hang out with them. so, while you will notice there are no pictures of fireworks, it's because i didn't actually get to see any. but matthew did, and that is the important part.

overall, it was a super relaxed day, and we needed it.

RoadTrip '9 - Day Two - Route 66

driving on the road is easily one of my favorite things to do. especially when it's the road less traveled. i've always done it by myself, but this time, matthew did it with me. it was excellent.

i think most people would think taking a 4 year old on an 11 hour road trip into the middle of goodness-knows where would be ... the wrong thing to do ... but i'm here to say he did it like it was genetics at play.

without going into the details and history of route 66, i'll say this -- it's infinitely more interesting than traveling on the interstate. and the 4 year old agrees. during our trip we encountered crazy storms, shady outhouses, awesome burgers, and haunted houses. what more could you ask for?

and the finale was also most excellent -- destination beach -- including a homey bed and breakfast with down feather-beds. sa-weet! at certain points i was almost misty-eyed. almost. here is the overview:

So, it's been two and a half years since my last road-trip. This time, Matthew is coming with me. I'm gonna try to make it action packed, and get as much (and much needed) facetime in.

The goal here is to take some photos of the trip, and to blog about it at night. Two things I'm not good at doing. But if you're following twitter/facebook, then you'll know if I'm doing a good job or not.

Here is the breakdown:

Thursday - The Nances
	stay in flag overnight

Friday - Road Trip
take route 66 / I40 to carlsbad ~ all day event
	arrive carlsbad late

Saturday - Beach Day
	hit the beach
maybe meet up with the reilys?
	find some fireworks

Sunday - Urban Adventures
	new childrens museum
the reuben h. fleet science center
	san diego automotive museum
san diego natural history museum - ocean oasis @ 4pm

Monday - Mission Bay
	seaworld till it hurts

Tuesday
	depart san diego

Carlsbad Tavern's Chicken Wings

OK. These are most definitely NOT wings. What we're talking about here is something else entirely: a plateful of deep-fried sliced chicken breasts covered in a sweet, sticky, raspberry chipotle glaze, served atop a warm flour tortilla, with the minimal (but all important) sides of jicama and blue cheese dressing.

Now, for those of you that know me, I have a tendency to avoid cooked fruit -- any fruit in fact -- in my main dish fare. So, while I've been frequenting Carlsbad for over 2 years now with on-again-off-again regularity, I've always avoided ordering the wings, and instead always opted for the sliders. Mistake.

Wow. This dish is simply amazing. The trick (and the reason I thankfully changed my mind), as the bartender Jake informed me, is to order it "spicy". By doing so, they dump a bunch of habanero aioli in the mix -- and oh man -- now we're cookin' with gas!

The best part of this dish? When you come to find, sadly, that there's no more chicken to devour, the jig ain't up! All that hot, sweet glaze? All that blue cheese dressing that's been dripping as you transfer the chicken to your mouth? It's all right there on that tortilla. Have no fear, accept no shame -- roll that baby up, and enjoy all the sweetness and habanero hotness that it has to offer.

Caveat #1: You need to wait until 10PM because it's strictly a late-menu dish.

Caveat #2: A gutful of habaneros right before bedtime is ill-advised. Eat at 10, but go to bed at 2 (hey, that also happens to be last call -- what are the odds).

Upshot #1: Mostly chicken and jicamas, so it's high in protien and low in carbs. Then again, it's fried. But somehow seems better than eating a greasy burger and fries so late at night.

Upshot #2: (Er ... possibly a caveat) My rear balcony overlooks the parking lot of Carlsbad. If you wanna hang out call me up, and if i answer my phone, I'll meet you there!

Duck

"Duck is a magical word. Both a noun and a verb".

Boy, this is one strange film. It's so off-color that I wasn't even sure I wanted to write a review of it. That said, I took the time to rent it, the time to watch it, and the time to give it some thought -- so I guess it's only fair I take the time to write about it.

Duck is basically the amalgamation of Boy and his Dog and About Schmidt -- if you can imagine that. It's the story of an old, lovable grandpa-type fella who's lost everyone dear to him that's set to a backdrop of a dystopian future where he befriends a trusty animal companion -- his duck. We watch as they travel together, meet heroes and villains, experince trials and tribulations, and effectively discover the meaning of life. No ... seriously.

The amazing thing is that most of the time, it seems to work. I found, to my surprise, I really wanted the old man and the duck to make it. When they stumble into a drunken Halloween party, I kept getting that "oh no" feeling in my throat. It also does a pretty good job of forcing to viewer to ask themselves questions about loneliness, love, attachment, and ... the environment.

At the end of the day though, this movie is trying way too hard. And come on -- a duck? There had to be an animal that inspires more empathy than a duck. And to say that the ending (not to mention some of the preposterous situations along the way) was less than compelling is gross underestimate.

I've seen better films. I've seen worse movies. Take the 10 awards wreaths adorning the dvd cover with a grain of salt -- I think that's where I went wrong. Why am I such a sucker for indie films? I'm thinking next time i should just -- wait for it -- duck the cover.

Iron Man

I watched Iron Man after I watched Dark Night -- which to say the least -- sets the bar extremely high for comic book derivative feature films. And even with knowing this, this is one really great movie. In fact, I think it even did better in some arenas.

First, allow me to rattle on about what I didn't like. Now, never being an avid comic fan, there are some things I'll just never get. If Howard Stark (Is that an allusion to Howard Hughes, Howard Roark and Philippe Starck blended into one?) is such a genius, how is it possible he is the only one in the entire world with all that sophistication? The level of technology is not only implausible, it's borderline Star Trek -- right down to the quick-witted English-accented AI computer. And from a non-comic-fan, distanced perspective, it only goes to discredit the entire movie as a whole. I just kind of had to settle on the fact that this guy is a super-human genius and keeps all his stuff to himself. Riiight -- like he couldn't sell some of that to Intel.

Anyhow, from what I've been able to gather thanks to Wikipedia, the movie, for the most part, sticks to the original story line of the orginial comic, which is nice, I guess. And the special effects are certainly fun to watch. And who doesn't love watching non-descript Islamic extremists getting blown up, along with all their third-world accoutrements? Quote: "Technology. That's always been your Achilles heel in this part of the world." This part of the world? Hmm.

I'm digressing. The real reason to watch this movie (and the only reason to rent - I said RENT - Tropic Thunder) is to watch Robert Downey Jr in action. He is so hot right now. Seriously, he really was perfect for the role, and maybe that is just because initially, I was thinking how it should have been a simply awful role for him to play - but man -- he nailed it.

I think it is even fair to say that Robert Downey Jr played the cocky business man turned superhero far and away better than Christian Bale played Bruce Wayne slash Batman. It's probably because Robert Downey Jr actually was a coke-obsessed, alcoholic ladies man in real life at one point when Christian Bale was busy trying to lose 80 pounds of body weight method acting (Personal Note: Christian Bale is in fact one of my favorite actors).

He really is very good in this movie -- even with all the crazy space-age insanity existing transparently next to his trusty Audi -- he makes it all believable somehow. I rented it, but I really wished I would have seen this one in the theater. It seems like all that CG gold titanium alloy would have had more "pop" on the big screen.

PHP Fancy Hidden Extension Technique

I realize this has been covered to no end on the web in much more detail and compulsion than I would here. But I do use this quite a bit, so here is my version of it.

The PHP Fancy Hidden Extension Technique, or PFHET is basically hiding the .php from your users and the capturing whatever comes after the filename as your query to that PHP file. So the idea is that you can ditch the whole "action.php?query=something" altogether in favor of something like "action/something" which is obviously nicer -- and search engine friendly I might add.

One-Size-Fits All Desktop Downloader

Ever want to be able to allow people to download some of your sweet wallpapers that you've designed? The problem is, what resolution do you offer? Tricky, no? In a lot of ways it echoes the same issues of web design -- do you design for the lowest common denominator, i.e. 800×600, or do you make a bunch of them at different sizes? That seems dumb -- and a lot of work. Not to mention what about the crazy laptop resolutions out there like 1440×768. Are you gonna offer that size too?

Don't bother -- I have the solution for you! the One-Size-Fits-All Desktop Downloader -- let's call it the OSFADD. It uses JavaScript to detect the system resolution, then sends an AJAX request to PHP that auto-generates a sized image for you and then returns the image to the browser -- all without leaving the page. Another nice feature is that it only creates new images if it hasn't yet -- cutting down on unnecessary server load. I'm posting the source up -- lets start thinking smarter not harder kids.

Oh, and BTW, I am also using some pretty tricky PHP stuff to use the url to figure out the image using the PHP Fancy Hidden Extension Technique. So, if I had a different source image besides "wallpaper.png", say "other.png" you could change the last portion of the url from "wallpaper" to "other" and it will grab that PNG instead. Pretty slick, huh?

Try out the OSFADD now!

Just Another Reason Safari Sucks Ass

If you are reading this, it's probably because you got redirected here when you clicked on "This functionality has been removed from Safari because Apple developers are elitists.". Either that, or you searched for something like "the" - nice one. Either way, I am here to tell you that right now, I think Safari sucks big time.

Why can't I style form elements? It's that simple. I want my submit button to look a certain way. I don't care that you care about usability. Not EVERY site needs to care. Yes, ok, Amazon should care. Great - I don't.

No matter what I do, unless I want to embed a specific image on the page in lieu of the regular submit button, I can't style it -- it will always be that hideous blue aqua theme. OK News Flash -- nothing on my site is aqua blue. I am a designer. I want shit to look a certain way, and that way is NOT aqua blue.

I need to quote a web developer from this article that basically covers the issue at hand: "and who's going to make the Aqua buttons look better anyway". Is this guy for real? Apparently, according to the "Man In Blue", the Aqua submit button is the perfect button for every occasion. How nice for you both -- and how convenient your site is all blue.

Anyhow, so I am disabling all form objects on my site in Safari in protest. I mean, I have to say, the IE team are a bunch of retards, but at least there are HACKS available to fix their stupidity. Safari developers aren't stupid -- they are elitists -- and I am afraid there is only room for one design elitist on THIS website.

Javascript Inner Viewport Resize Method

Do you have something that you plan on displaying in your browser that is a specific size? Want to resize the browser viewing area to exactly match it? Want to do all this in a popup window? While, yes, resizing browsers is not a good usability idea, I have come up with a (I think) bulletproof way to size the browser viewport to it's inside dimensions.

The Javascript Inner Viewport Resize Method, allows you to resize the browser to match an exact size and location that you specify. Originally, i built it to automatically display media in a pop-up window nice and centered -- check this out.

Hypergeneric Flash (unFocus) History (Keeper)

The holy grail of website usability: Back Button, Bookmarking, Live Url. You really can't get away with just two. Traditional HTML browsing has all three naturally and never seems to suffer from usability-envy. Flash users do. We've been struggling with those three little bits since FutureSplash. So what to do?

So, enter Hypergeneric Flash History -- graciously powered by unFocus's History Keeper (which i might add is a genius bit ofJavaScript). I've built a sitelet that showcases the Hypergeneric Flash History's stuff. You can download the source files there too, but have added a link here for good measure. Enjoy.

Oh, and do give a shout-out to unFocus for me. It's what started all this. And if you download the source and use it, or can help with some of the ongoing outstanding issues, do let me know.
